Federal Investment Cuts Put Critical Meal Programs at Risk

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, August 12, 2025, U.S. Congresswoman Laura Friedman (CA-30) visited the construction site of Project Angel Food’s new The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Campus. The $51.5 million expansion will double the organization’s capacity to deliver medically tailored meals to people living with serious illness across Los Angeles County.
In recent months, Project Angel Food has lost more than $500,000 in federal investments. This includes a 30% reduction in HIV/AIDS grants totaling $340,000 and the elimination of FEMA emergency food funds totaling $175,000. While private donors and foundations have helped bridge the immediate shortfall, the ongoing uncertainty threatens programs like CalAIM, which provides medically tailored meals to low-income patients through partnerships with local healthcare providers.
“Touring the site of Project Angel Food’s new campus makes it clear how much this expansion will mean for countless people across our community,” said Congresswoman Laura Friedman (CA-30). “Just like I was able to unfreeze federal HIV prevention investments, I’ll keep fighting Trump’s cuts to this incredible organization that keeps thousands of Angelenos healthy and out of the hospital system. These meals save lives, reduce healthcare costs, and strengthen our entire community.”
PROJECT ANGEL FOOD:
  • Founded in 1989.
  • 7,157 seriously ill clients served each year.
  • 1.5 million meals delivered annually.
  • More than 20 million meals delivered to date.
  • 89¢ of every dollar goes directly to meal programs.
  • New campus will double production capacity.
In June, less than a month after Friedman and California Congressional Democrats urged the Trump Administration to release frozen HIV prevention and surveillance investments, the funding was restored.
