RELEASE: Congresswoman Friedman Visits Van Ness WIC Center

LOS ANGELES, CA — U.S. Congresswoman Laura Friedman (CA-30) toured the Van Ness WIC Center, one of two WIC agencies serving thousands of pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women as well as children under 5 years of age in the area. Friedman spoke to program administrators about their chief concerns regarding federal funding of WIC.
“In the wealthiest nation on Earth, we should not be forcing American families to swallow the bitter pill that is hunger. Yet time and time again, Trump and Congressional Republicans have cut nutrition assistance for children and mothers in order to afford tax breaks to the ultra-rich,” said Congresswoman Laura Friedman (CA-30). “I’m working towards a better alternative for America – one where families are nourished and our children are fed.”
WIC FEEDS FAMILIES IN CA-30 & ACROSS CALIFORNIA:
- 10,312 Los Angelenos served in CA-30 alone.
- More than 1 million Californians rely on WIC, 611,543 of which are children.
- Nearly 50% of all infants born in California are enrolled in WIC by age 1.
- WIC supports families with healthy food, nutrition tips, expert guidance on infant feeding, and more.
Friedman is fighting for nutrition assistance for all Americans in Congress. She is a cosponsor of the WIC Benefits Protection Act, which would provide mandatory funding for the WIC program. This would eliminate the risk of the program being unavailable during government shutdowns, as was the case when Congressional Republicans shut down the federal government in 2025. She is also cosponsoring the Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act of 2025, which would reverse the $187 billion in cuts to SNAP that Republicans initiated in H.R. 1.
