Glendale News-Press: U.S. Rep Joins Discussion on State of Film Industry

August 18, 2025

Rep. Laura Friedman  met with Directors Guild of America leadership Wednesday to discuss efforts to bring film production back to Los Angeles amid concerns about artificial intelligence's growing influence on the industry.

The California congresswoman joined DGA Leadership Council members for a roundtable focused on the state of filmmaking in Los Angeles and legislative actions to boost local production. Guild members also raised concerns about AI's implications for the film industry and intellectual property protections.

“Every time a film project leaves Los Angeles, the small businesses and working people that depend on them are affected," said Friedman. "That’s why the discussions we had at this roundtable weren’t just about bringing back film and filming jobs, but also about how we create a rising tide that lifts all boats. I’m working on a national film tax credit that will do just that, and I’m grateful for the support and insight of the DGA Leadership Council.”

Friedman said she is working on national film tax credit legislation and thanked the DGA Leadership Council for their support and input.

The representative has led several initiatives to combat runaway production from Hollywood. Earlier this year, she rallied labor unions and spearheaded a letter to the Motion Picture Association highlighting the benefits of returning productions to Los Angeles.

In June, Friedman participated in a roundtable with Hollywood-area business and community leaders that examined how runaway production affects local commerce and tourism.

Friedman represents California's 30th Congressional District.
