Internships

As an Intern for Congresswoman Laura Friedman, you will provide a range of support to the office as you learn about the functions and roles of a US House office. Interns have the opportunity to contribute to administrative, constituent response, communications, legislative and other areas as needed. Intern responsibilities and opportunities include:  

DC Office Intern: 

  • Answer incoming calls and capture and log constituent opinions and requests 

  • Conduct research and draft responses to constituent correspondence to address key issue areas  

  • Open, sort, and distribute mail and other messages to ensure the office can respond to all inquiries in a timely manner  

  • Assist with constituent flag requests, tours of the Capitol, and visits to other national landmarks   

  • Attend committee hearings 

  • Shadow employees to learn the legislative and communications process 

District Office Intern: 

  • Answer incoming calls, and capture and log constituent casework requests 

  • Open, sort, and distribute mail and other messages to ensure the office can respond to all inquiries in a timely manner 

  • Draft correspondence and memoranda to assist District Office operations  

  • Assist District staff to complete constituent casework activities   

  • Assist with planning and execution of the Member’s public events in the District   

  • Accompany District staff to public forums, meetings, and events, as necessary, to serve as a representative to the Member 

  • Shadow employees to learn the communications, outreach and/or constituent service processes 

Interns receive a stipend and may work on a part-time or full-time basis. A minimum commitment of 20 hours per week is required. In-person attendance and reliable transportation are essential.   

The priority deadlines for each term are as follows:  

 Fall 2025: Up to 120 days during the months of August – December 2025 

Deadline: Sunday, July 13, 2025 

Spring 2026: Up to 120 days during the months of January – May 2026 

Deadline: Sunday, November 9, 2025 

 Summer 2026: Up to 120 days during the months of May – August 2026 

Deadline: Sunday, March 8, 2026   

Internship Requirements:

Pursuant to federal appropriations law, to be employed by a House office in a paid position in the continental United States an individual must:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen;
  2. Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B);
  3. Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
  4. Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law).
