California’s Democratic representatives are warning that the ongoing federal government shutdown is worsening a health care emergency for millions of residents, with community clinics, hospitals, and patients bracing for funding cuts and coverage losses.
Rep. Mike Haridopolos has been averaging 15,000 steps a day during the shutdown, and his years of being a history teacher have come in handy.
With staff-led tours of the Capitol on pause until the government reopens, the Florida Republican has led more than 20 tours of his own this month.
“As a former history teacher, I love doing them, actually,” he said. “I love telling people the story of the building of the Capitol, some of the famous figures.”

At its meeting on Monday, August 18, the Pasadena City Council heard from Rep. Laura Friedman regarding her proposed legislation and future plans for the city. The council also listened to concerns from members of the public on issues ranging from immigration enforcement to housing policy.
Rep. Friedman discussed two bills she recently introduced: the Restoring Essential Healthcare Act and the No Mask for ICE Act.
