On Saturday, June 28, 2025, U.S. Congresswoman Laura Friedman (CA-30) celebrated the release of nearly $20 million in HIV prevention investments, previously frozen by the Trump Administration, while also celebrating the anniversary of the Stonewall protests that took place 56 years ago on that date.  

Rep. Friedman (CA-30) was joined by APLA Health CEO Craig Thompson and LA LGBT Chief Strategy Officer, Terra Russell-Slavin—two of the previously impacted organizations—at the APLA Health Michael Gottlieb Center in West Hollywood.

LOS ANGELES – Congressional leaders celebrated the restored $20 million in previously frozen HIV prevention funds and surveillance programs for thousands of residents in South Los Angeles and beyond.

The frozen funds would have forced Los Angeles County to terminate contracts with 39 community health providers that would have cut services for HIV testing, STD screening, PrEP navigation, and community education.

The Trump administration has lifted a freeze on federal funds for HIV prevention and surveillance programs, officials said, following an outcry from HIV prevention organizations, health experts and Democrats in Congress.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health received notice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday that it had been awarded nearly $20 million for HIV prevention for the 12-month period that began June 1 — an increase of $338,019 from the previous year.

APLA Health recently opened its brand new the Michael Gottlieb Health Center in West Hollywood with a glitzy ribbon-cutting featuring a bevy of local politicians and community leaders on Friday, June 13.
